What is
Airbrush tanning?
Airbrush Tanning is the process
of achieving a great looking tan without exposure to the the sun or
ultraviolet rays from a tanning bed.
How does Airbrush Tanning work?
It is applied by spraying the body with a UV
free solution called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is a colorless sugar
that has been slightly tinted and darkens the skin. DHA works by
interacting with the amino acids in the dead surface cells found in the
outermost layer of the skin, producing color changes. As the dead skin
cells are naturally wearing off, the color gradually fades, just like a
genuine sun tan. This does not cause damage to the underlying living
layers of skin.
Is
Airbrush Tanning safe?
Yes, the active ingredient DHA has been approved for cosmetic
applications for 30 years. Most sunless and bronzing tanning lotions
use DHA. People who have allergies should test their skin f irst before
using. Or check the ingredient list to make sure there is no concern
before getting sprayed.
How do I prepare for a tanning
session?
For
maximum results, before your spray session, shower and exfoliate the
skin with a luffa. Exfoliating allows for a smoother application as
well as helping the tan to fade evenly. Shaving should also be done
prior to tanning. Make sure your skin is free of perfumes, lotions,
oils, gels, deodorant or any product on the skin that would create a
barrier. (skin should not be dry)
How
long does this process take and what should I wear?
The entire
process takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Some clients prefer wearing a
bathing suit, or some type of undergarment, while others prefer
no tan-lines. We use the most utmost discretion for these requests.
Once your session is complete it is important that you wear old loose
fitting clothes due to the DHA dye still absorbing into your skin and
some may come off on clothes. This washes out except on garments made
of nylon, silk or wool.
What should I do after my airbrush
tanning session?
Wear loose
fitting clothing. Wait five to six hours before taking a shower, giving
enough time for the solution to absorb into the skin. Also, do not work
out or do any activity that you can sweat for the same period of time.
This allows the DHA solution plenty of time to react with the amino
acids in the skin.
How
long does the airbrush tan last?
We have found that the length of a tan is determined by: Skin Type - a
persons skin type will react to the mist very much like it does to the
natural sun. Amount of Wear - Only the outermost layer of the
skin is "tanned". As the skin layer is lost, so is the tan. Wear comes
from rubbing, soaking in water or long showers, tight clothing,
"scratchy" clothing or bleach. You wouldn't use an SOS pad on the
finish of your new car, so don't be abrasive to your skin and you will
keep your tan longer. Finally, dry skin will shorten the life of your
tan! SO- ALWAYS MOISTURIZE. It depends on you.
The
following
products will lighten or make the sunless tan blotchy:
* Dove shower gel or
soap will fade the tan
* Curel lotion has destroyed some tans
* Hair inhibiting lotions such as Jergens, tend to make the tan yellow
* Anti-aging products that "renew" "refresh" or exfoliate skin
* AHA's (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) glycolic, lactic, malic, citric &
tartaric acids
* BHA's (Beta Hydroxy Acids-Salicylic Acid)
* Retin-A type products
* Toners containing Witch Hazel or Alcohol
* Anti-acne products that exfoliate the skin-Accutane or Salicylic Acid
* Makeup remover cleaning products or oils used to clean away eye makeup
* Bar soaps, especially deodorant varieties or anti-bacterial
* Use of loofa or a scrub mitt etc, for daily washing (use soft
washcloth)
* Band-Aids or adhesive tape will pull off the tan
* Facial masks or exfoliating scrubs
* Bore type adhesive facial strips
* Wax hair removal: Nair, Veet, Neet, etc.
* Shaving exfoliates the skin therefore fading the tan. Use a new and
clean razor
and a lubricating product such as hair conditioner
* Pat dry after the shower, don't rub dry
* Body hair bleach products
* Submersion in a hot tub, swimming pool with chlorine, salt water even
a long
hot bath can effect the "tan"
* Women's tans may also develop differently during various hormonal
occurrences
* People with oily skin tend to develop a lighter tan then people with
dry skin. The oils
can coat the skin and dry skin absorbs more product
faster
* Bug spray-sprayed directly onto the skin can remove or fade the tan.
